Servicing Guide · Updated June 2026 · By the Brad Ward Motors workshop team
If your exhaust has suddenly got louder or sounds like it is blowing, it usually means there is a leak somewhere in the system, most often from a rusted-through section, a failed muffler, or a joint that has come loose. It is worth dealing with promptly, both because a leaking exhaust can fail a Warrant of Fitness and because fumes can get into the cabin. At Brad Ward Motors in Henderson we inspect the whole system, find where it is leaking, and quote the repair before any work.
- A louder exhaust means gas is escaping through a leak
- Rust is the usual cause on NZ roads
- A leaking or noisy exhaust can fail a WOF
- Exhaust fumes in the cabin are a real safety risk
- Sections can often be replaced individually to save cost
- We inspect the whole system and quote honestly
What a louder exhaust usually means
A healthy exhaust is sealed from the engine to the tailpipe, so it stays quiet. When it gets louder, it is because gas is escaping before the end of the system, through a hole, a split, a failed muffler or a leaking joint.
Rust is the usual culprit on New Zealand roads, where exhausts corrode from the inside and out over time, eventually rusting through. A blowing sound that changes with engine speed, or a rattle from a loose heat shield or broken mounting, are common too. Pinpointing exactly where it is leaking is the first step.
Why it can fail a WOF and matters for safety
An exhaust with a leak or that is excessively noisy can fail a Warrant of Fitness, so a blowing exhaust is not just an annoyance, it can stop your car being legal. WOF rules also fail exhausts that are insecure or have leaks that could let fumes into the cabin.
That last point is the safety one. Exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide, and a leak ahead of or under the cabin can let it in, which is dangerous, especially with the windows up. If you can smell exhaust inside the car, get it checked promptly rather than driving around with it.
Repairing versus replacing sections
Modern exhausts are made in sections, so it is often possible to replace just the part that has failed rather than the whole system, which keeps the cost down. A single rusted section or a failed muffler can usually be replaced on its own.
If the system is generally rusty and on its way out, replacing more of it at once can make more sense than coming back for the next section in a few months. We inspect the whole exhaust, show you what has failed and what is still sound, and recommend the most cost-effective approach honestly rather than selling you a full system you do not need.
Getting it quiet again
Bring the car to our Moselle Ave workshop and we will inspect the exhaust from the manifold to the tailpipe, including mountings and heat shields, and find exactly where it is leaking.
You get a no-obligation quote before any work, and we explain what needs doing and why. Whether it is a single section, a muffler or a clamp, we confirm the price up front and back the work with our 12-month workmanship warranty. If you have a WOF coming up, we can sort the exhaust and check the rest of the car at the same time so you only make one trip.
