Servicing Guide · Updated June 2026 · By the Brad Ward Motors workshop team
The clearest signs a clutch is wearing out are slipping, where the engine revs climb but the car does not pull as it should, a bite point that has crept higher up the pedal, and a heavy, juddering or noisy clutch. Catching these early matters, because a worn clutch that is left will eventually fail completely and leave you stranded, often at the worst moment. At Brad Ward Motors in Henderson we check the clutch, tell you honestly how much life is left, and quote any work before we start.
- Slipping, where revs rise but the car doesn't pull, is the clearest sign
- A high or vague bite point points to wear
- Juddering, heaviness or noises are warning signs
- A burning smell can mean the clutch is overheating
- City driving, hill starts and towing wear it faster
- Replace the flywheel at the same time where needed
Signs your clutch is wearing
The most telling sign is slipping. You press the accelerator, the engine revs rise, but the car does not accelerate to match, especially noticeable going uphill or pulling away under load. That means the clutch is no longer gripping fully.
Other signs are a bite point that has moved high up the pedal travel, a clutch that feels heavy or notchy, a juddering or shuddering as you pull away, and noises like rattling or squealing that change when you press the pedal. A burning smell after hill starts or heavy traffic can mean the clutch is overheating as it slips.
What wears a clutch out
A clutch is a wearing part, so it does not last forever, but how long it lasts depends heavily on use. Lots of stop-start city driving, hill starts, towing and riding the clutch all wear it faster. A clutch that is looked after can last well over a hundred thousand kilometres, while a hard-worked one wears much sooner.
Resting your foot on the clutch pedal, or holding the car on the clutch at the lights instead of the brake, are common habits that shorten its life. Once the friction material is worn down, slipping sets in and replacement is the only real fix.
Slipping versus dragging
It helps to know the difference. A slipping clutch is not gripping, so the engine revs without the car responding. A dragging clutch is the opposite, it is not releasing fully, so the gears are hard to select or grind, or the car creeps when the pedal is fully down.
Both point to a clutch or hydraulic problem that needs looking at, but they feel different from the driver's seat. Describing exactly what you are noticing helps us diagnose it faster. Either way, a quick check tells us whether it is the clutch itself or the hydraulics operating it.
Replacing it properly
Because the gearbox has to come out to reach the clutch, it is a labour-intensive job, which is why doing it once and doing it right matters. While it is apart, we will tell you whether the flywheel should be machined or replaced at the same time, since the labour to reach it is already done and skimping there can mean paying for the whole job twice.
We give you a no-obligation quote up front that sets out exactly what is included, call you before any extra work, and back the repair with our 12-month workmanship warranty. Courtesy cars are available on request so you are not stuck while it is in.
