Automatic Transmission Warning Signs

HomeAutomatic Transmission Warning Signs

Servicing Guide · Updated June 2026 · By the Brad Ward Motors workshop team

The warning signs of an automatic transmission problem are slipping, where the engine revs change without the car responding, harsh or jerky gear changes, a delay before the car moves when you select drive, and a burnt smell from the transmission fluid. Because transmission repairs can be major, catching these early, when it is often just a fluid and filter service, can save a great deal of money. At Brad Ward Motors in Henderson we check the transmission, advise honestly, and quote any work before we start.

  • Slipping, where revs rise but speed doesn't, is a key sign
  • Harsh, jerky or delayed shifts point to a problem
  • A burnt smell from the fluid means heat damage
  • Tired fluid is often behind hesitant shifting
  • Caught early, it's often just a fluid and filter service
  • We diagnose honestly, service-level fix or larger

Signs of a transmission problem

The clearest sign is slipping, where the engine revs rise or change but the car does not accelerate to match, as if the transmission is not fully engaged. Harsh, jerky or clunky gear changes, a noticeable delay before the car moves after you select drive or reverse, and shifts that happen at the wrong time are all warning signs.

Other clues are whining or humming noises that change with speed, a burnt smell from the transmission fluid, or warning lights on the dash. Any of these is worth getting checked before it gets worse.

Why fluid condition matters

Automatic transmissions rely on clean fluid at the right level to shift smoothly and stay cool. Over time the fluid degrades, and on a lot of cars that have never had a transmission service, tired fluid is behind harsh or hesitant shifting.

In many cases, catching a problem early means it is a transmission service, fresh fluid and a filter, rather than a major internal repair. That is exactly why we check transmission fluid condition during a service, and why we always start with the simplest likely cause rather than assuming the worst. A burnt smell or very dark fluid, though, points to heat damage that needs proper assessment.

Slipping and harsh shifts

Slipping and harsh shifting feel different but both point to a transmission that needs attention. Slipping feels like a loss of drive, the engine working harder than the car's speed suggests. Harsh shifting feels like a jolt or clunk each time it changes gear.

Low or degraded fluid is a common cause of both and is the cheapest to fix if caught early. Persistent slipping or harsh shifts after a fluid service can mean internal wear that needs a closer look. We diagnose it properly and tell you honestly whether it is a service-level fix or something larger, so you can weigh up the cost against the value of the car.

FAQ

Automatic Transmission Warning Signs: common questions

The main signs are slipping, where the engine revs rise or change but the car does not accelerate to match, harsh or jerky gear changes, and a delay before the car moves when you select drive or reverse. You might also notice the transmission shifting at the wrong times, whining or humming noises that change with speed, a burnt smell from the transmission fluid, or a warning light on the dash. Any of these is worth getting checked promptly, because transmission problems tend to get worse and the repairs can be major. The good news is that caught early, the cause is often degraded fluid, which is a far cheaper fix than internal repairs. Bring the car to our Henderson workshop and we will assess it honestly and give you a quote. Call (09) 837 1723.

Often, yes, if the problem is caught early and the cause is degraded or low fluid, which is common on cars that have never had a transmission service. Automatic transmissions rely on clean fluid at the correct level to shift smoothly and stay cool, and tired fluid is frequently behind harsh, hesitant or jerky shifting. In those cases, a transmission service with fresh fluid and a filter can restore smooth shifting at a fraction of the cost of internal repairs. However, if the fluid is badly burnt or the transmission has been slipping for a long time, there may be internal wear that a service alone will not fix. That is why we assess the fluid and how it is shifting before recommending anything, so you are not paying for work that will not solve the problem. We will tell you honestly which situation yours is in.

It varies by vehicle, so the manufacturer's schedule is the best guide, but as a broad rule many automatics benefit from a fluid service somewhere in the range of every 60,000 to 100,000 kilometres. Some makers describe the fluid as lifetime fill, but in practice, especially with New Zealand's stop-start city driving and our used-import fleet where service history is often unknown, fresh fluid helps the transmission shift smoothly and last longer. If your car has never had a transmission service and is past that sort of mileage, it is worth having the fluid condition checked. We check transmission fluid as part of a service at our Moselle Ave workshop in Henderson and will tell you honestly whether it is due, with a quote before any work.

It is best not to keep driving a noticeably slipping automatic transmission any more than you have to, because slipping generates heat, and heat is what damages transmissions, so continuing to drive can turn a smaller problem into a much larger and more expensive one. A transmission that is slipping or shifting harshly is telling you it needs attention. If it is mild and you need to get the car to a workshop, drive gently and avoid towing or heavy loads. The sooner it is assessed, the more likely the cause is something straightforward like fluid condition rather than major internal wear. Bring it to our Henderson workshop, or call (09) 837 1723, and we will check it and tell you honestly what is going on before any work.
