You can service a new car at any qualified workshop in New Zealand without voiding the manufacturer's warranty, as long as the work follows the manufacturer's schedule and uses the right parts. That is set out in the Consumer Guarantees Act, and it means you are not locked into the dealership to keep your warranty valid. An independent workshop like Brad Ward Motors is usually cheaper, more personal, and just as qualified, while a dealer can make sense for warranty recalls or very specific software work. Here is how to decide what suits your car.

Will an independent void my new-car warranty?
No. Under the Consumer Guarantees Act and fair trading rules, a manufacturer cannot require you to service exclusively at their dealership to keep your warranty. What matters is that servicing is done on schedule, to the manufacturer's specification, with parts that meet the required standard, and that you keep the records. Any MTA-approved workshop can do that.
We keep detailed service records for exactly this reason, so your service history stands up if you ever make a warranty claim or sell the car. If a manufacturer ever tells you the warranty is only valid with dealer servicing, that is not how New Zealand consumer law works.
What MTA approval means
Brad Ward Motors is an MTA-approved workshop. The Motor Trade Association sets standards its members agree to meet, including a code of conduct and access to dispute resolution if something ever goes wrong. It is a recognised mark of a trustworthy repairer that an independent earns and keeps.

Cost and service differences
Independents generally charge less per hour than franchise dealers and do not carry the same overheads, so the same scheduled service usually costs less with us. You also tend to deal with the same people each time, who get to know your car and your history rather than treating each visit as a transaction.
We will tell you what genuinely needs doing now and what can safely wait, rather than upselling to hit a service-package target. Every job gets a quote and we call before any extra work, so the bill is always one you agreed to.
When a dealer makes sense
There are times the dealer is the right call. If your car is subject to a manufacturer recall, that work is done free at the dealership. Brand-new cars under a fixed-price capped-servicing plan can be cheaper to keep at the dealer while the plan runs, and some complex software updates or warranty repairs need manufacturer-specific equipment.
