How Often Does Your Car Need a WOF?

HomeWOF Checker

Pop in the year your vehicle was first registered for an indicative answer. Then we’ll confirm the exact requirement for your car.

A rough year is fine, you’ll find it on your rego label or registration papers.

This tool gives a general indication based on the current New Zealand WOF rules and is not a substitute for official advice. WOF frequency is set by NZTA (Waka Kotahi) and may change. Always confirm your vehicle’s exact requirement on the official NZTA Warrant of Fitness page or with our team. Read more in our 2026 WOF rules guide.

WOF frequency FAQ

Under current New Zealand rules, vehicles first registered from 2000 onward generally need a WOF every 12 months, older vehicles every 6 months, and brand-new vehicles get their first WOF at 3 years. Pop your registration year into the checker above for an indicative answer, then we will confirm it exactly.

The Government has signalled changes that may reduce how often some newer vehicles need a WOF. The exact rules are set by NZTA and can change, so the safest move is to confirm your vehicle with our Henderson team rather than rely on a date that might shift.

We are an NZTA-authorised WOF provider at 10A Moselle Ave, Henderson. Most inspections are done while you wait, and we give you a quote before any repairs needed to pass.

Driving on an expired WOF is an offence except when going directly to or from a repair or inspection, and your insurance may be affected. If yours is due or overdue, book with our Henderson workshop and we will sort it.
