Important warning signs when it comes to brake repair

Brake repair is an essential part of car servicing, but is often overlooked in regular maintenance. This is because brakes will wear down slowly over time. So slowly in fact that you won’t notice it. Because this wear and tear happens gradually, it’s difficult to notice just how bad your brakes have become until it’s too late.

Below are three signs that you need to keep an eye out for when driving. If you recognise any of these things, then it’s time to book in for a brake repair service.

Unusual noises

You ever hear that high pitched whine coming from some cars? Well that noise is put in there deliberately! It’s a warning indicator in your brake pad that screams when the pad wears down to a dangerous size. Once you hear this screeching, then it’s time to book in for brake repair. If you don’t then then next sound you’ll hear will be a grinding noise- and now you’re in real trouble. This grinding noise means that your brake pads are completely worn away, and that sound is metal against metal. Once this happens, your brakes will take you a lot longer to stop, and are practically useless in emergency situations. It also damages your rotors, making the repair job a complicated, expensive one.

Pulling

We’ve all probably experienced this at some point, even if it wasn’t in our own car. Pulling is when the car feels like it has a mind of its own, constantly wanting to pull you over to the side of the road, or if you’re really unlucky, into oncoming traffic. This isn’t uniquely a braking problem, it may be the wheels need alignment, but it could be something wrong with the brakes. If it is, then it’s usually because a calliper is stuck, causing friction in one single wheel, and thus pulling you over. If you find the car pulling whilst braking, that could mean that your brake pads are uneven, causing different wheels to slow at different times. Regardless of what’s causing it, if you feel the car pulling, it’s definitely time to check in for a brake repair service.

The brake pedal acting weird

Obviously, being connected to the brakes, the brake pedal is a great indicator if anything is wrong under the car. If you feel the pedal vibrating, then this could mean your rotors have been warped. This happens over time due to heat and stress; if you tow a lot for example, your rotors will be more likely to warp. If you find your car slamming to a halt at the slightest touch, then that may suggest contaminated brake fluid or an unevenly worn rotor. If the opposite is happening, and you have to push the pedal all the way to the floor before anything happens, then it’s definitely time to book in a brake repair service. This means at the very least your brake pads are worn down, and in really serious situations, it could be brake line obstruction.

So if you notice any of these warning signs, then it’s time to book yourself in for a brake repair service. Keep your family safe on the road this summer!
